American tennis player Andy Roddick was a little bit of the American tennis gem there for a little bit. After winning the 2003 US Open, he then reached three other Grand Slam finals. Two in Wimbledon and another US Open, he lost to Roger Federer each time. He has failed to reach the finals in The French Open and the Australian Open.

Roddick holds the record for the fastest serve ever recorded in professional tennis of 155 mph.

After his amazing 2003 season he then suffered a series of injuries and has been fighting his way back to world number on status ever since. He currently sits at number six in the world. But competition is fierce now.

Not to mention his tennis rival Roger Federer has been knocked out as the world number one, he still sits in between Roddick and the number one ranking. And then there is Rafael Nadal, who has just become a tennis powerhouse. He is going for his fourth consecutive title at The French Open this year.

The French Open has been a place of defeat for both Roddick and Federer.

Roddick has seen prosperity on the grass courts of Wimbledon, and could find that to be the surface he excels on and of course the US Open.

Time will tell if Roddick can ever regain his former number one glory.

Pepsi Throwback and Natural Sugar Soda

Are you tired of everything being sweetened with corn syrup? There is something to be said for natural ingredients and especially natural sugar. Natural sugar soda is usually not reserved for the US map. The entire map of Europe, such as Denmark, France and other countries usually use natural sugar in their soda. Soda is a part of Americana, but unfortunately natural sugar went by the way side long ago. So bring in the past!

Now soda lovers can enjoy that same experience stateside with Pepsi Throwback. The throwback is the natural sugar. They are also releasing Mountain Dew with natural sugar as well. It will be in limited release for about eight weeks from late April to the middle of June.

The taste sensation of Pepsi throwback is completely different from traditional Pepsi. The taste is more of a sweet with the carbonation. It does not exactly burn like old school coke or European Coke, but it really is a vast improvement. It’s unfortunate that the pop will not be around for a longer time.

You can find the soda at most mass retailers including Target, Wal-Mart and local grocery stores. It really is beyond belief how different it is from its American counterpart.

Perhaps after its short induction Pepsi will realize that the American market yearns for natural sugar soda. Shigmo Festival

The Shigmo festival is widely celebrated in Goa, India. It is one of the most prominent festivals in the Hindu community and has a religious and cultural significance. Recently, the state government has begun to sponsor parades to demonstrate its support of the festival’s purpose. Most of the themes seen in the parade floats depict mythological characters and stories from the region. Various areas in Goa have different ways of celebrating and most have a unique focus, though the essence is the same throughout. They usually take place in March of each year. Each rural area has its own dates designated for this elaborate festival. Many tourists staying in Goa hotels have the opportunity to participate in them, and enjoy the fabulous splendor of the floats’ designs.

The Shigmo festivals fall under two categories, the little festival “Dhakto Shigmo” and the big festival “Vodlo Shigmo.” There is not a significant difference between them, although a common distinction is that the Dahkto Shigmo is a coming together of all of the agricultural laborers and the working class, while the Vodlo Shigmo is a bringing together of all people. The Dahkto is typically celebrated in the Old Conquest regions of Goa, while the Vodlo generally takes place in the New Conquests. The Old Conquest refers to areas in Goa that remained under Portuguese rule longer than the others.

There are standard themes and performance rituals associated with the Shigmo. There is a particular genre of folk song that is sung when the villagers all gather together. These are called Naman. These songs are sung primarily during the Dahkto festival, which also includes many folk dances. The Vodlo will usually take place in temples, and a different celebration will occur in a different temple depending on the date. It is traditional for musicians to walk around playing large drums and people travel with them, dancing through the village. Money is given to the drummers who carry large plates for this purpose and they usually sing a special song indicating their appreciation for the donation. It is believed that the spirit gade padne enters the dancers on the last day of festival, and there is a community bathing ritual called the Mand Thevane that takes place after the festival ends.

Wild Elephants of India

For many years, the forests and jungles surrounding many cities of India and the Delhi, India hotels and businesses, were filled with wild elephants. While no official census is on record for the time in the early part of the Seventeenth Century it is said that one of the Moghul Emperors, Jehangir had captive, close to 115,000 elephants in his empire. The wild elephants today are descendants of Jehangir’s elephants, and scientists have extrapolated from this, that there were most likely, at one time more than one million animals in the wild. Sadly, the population today is no where near that number.

While there are still some relatively large groups of elephants living in the Northeastern and Southern regions of the country, for many of the animals the threat of extinction is quite possible. As in most developing countries, roads are built, buildings are constructed, and this creates less and less space. Their natural habitat is disappearing. Beginning in the middle of the twentieth century, this has been the case throughout large portions of India. The population has exploded, and the demand for development in order to support the economy, has led to the cultivation of former territories of the elephants.

This has raised concern, and in 1992 the organization, Project Elephant, was backed by the government of India. Project Elephant dedicated their energy to ensuring wild life preserves, with protected ‘bridges’ throughout the country as well. This was to cater to the natural migratory patterns of the herds. The elephant/human conflict is one aspect they address, as well as the constant improvements to the welfare of the elephants that are domesticated for use in the work force. They established twenty-five reserves and a survey taken in 2005 revealed that more than 20,000 animals were living in the reserves and the that elephant population was on the rise. Part of this is also due to the fact that Project Elephant is also the poaching ‘watch-dogs’. Many of the male elephants had been killed for their tusks, seriously affecting the genetic and reproduction viability of the species. Today, it appears to be looking up for the elephants of India, as Project Elephant continues their protection of and dedication to these gentle beasts.
