Holidays in Kuala Lumpur May 4th, 2009

Malaysia is an extremely diverse cultural and ethnic federation. Its capital city, Kuala Lumpur exemplifies this. As the major cultural and economic center of Malaysia, its diverse population has many festivals and holidays to celebrate throughout the year. Residents and tourists take part in these celebrations and the 5 star hotels Kuala Lumpur accommodate their many needs while providing luxury accommodations. The many fine dining and entertainment possibilities highlight a vacation that usually includes participation in one of the many festivals.

There is a large population of Chinese descendants and they celebrate holidays that are typical to Chinese culture. The major festival is the Chinese New Year, which occurs over a 15 day period. The manner in which this is celebrated varies by location and population, though it will commonly include elaborate decorations, gift giving and feasting. The idea behind giving is a symbolic clearing out of negative energy. Another major celebration is the Dragon Boat Festival ‘Duanwu’ in Mandarin. It is a public festival that occurs on the fifth day of the fifth month, which gives it its alternative name, Double Fifth. The festival generally includes racing in dragon boats, drinking realgar wine and eating zongzi, large rice wraps.

The Muslim population in Malaysia will usually celebrate traditional Muslim holidays. The most popular of these is the Hari Raya Puasa. This is a grand festival that marks the end of the fasting month, known as Ramadan. Ramadan is signified by the new moon, which symbolizes new beginnings and the end of fasting. Awal Muharram is the Islamic New Year and another major celebration for Muslims. This holiday honors the migration of the prophet Muhammad to the city that is now known as Medina. Sometimes cards and gifts are exchanged as part of this celebration. While there are many holidays and festivals in Kuala Lumpur that represent its diverse population, many of its residents join in celebrating all of these.
