Things to do in Johannesburg

I have two whole weeks to enjoy my vacation in Johannesburg. While I’m there I plan to experience what it is to be part of this wonderful city. One of the Johannesburg boutique hotels gave me excellent tips on where to go and what to see.

My first stop, naturally has food concerned about it. The Soweto Food Festival . It featured international cuisine and all the local food scene. I got to see a local Cafe’ demonstrate the preparations for the Venda and the Tswana. For around the world tastes, a chef demonstrated techniques used by other countries and I didn’t even have to travel! The festivals main focus was to generate cultural ideas with food being the platform. I think food should be the platform for any major summit or conference.

My next stop was Gold Reef City . I found out that it’s famous for mining, but it’s also famous for the restaurants, shops where I purchased, at an excellent price I might add, gold and silver jewelry. Gold Reef wasn’t too far for me to travel, only about 6 kilometers south of Johannesburg. But, what I liked the most was the night life, there was some excellent music being played at some very fun clubs.

Food first, jewelry second and alas, my last stop was at the World’s deepest pub . I saved drinking for last, because besides food and jewelry, drinking is a nice way to top off eating and spending. This pub is 226 meters underground. I had to ride in a worn out lift to get there. When we hit bottom, I had to pass a donkey stable, no donkey’s, because now the place is for tourist. The beer was an excellent way to say goodbye to Johannesburg.
