Records of Bollywood in Mumbai September 15th, 2009
My fourth day in Mumbai, jet lag completely over with, I went to Shiv Sagari. It’s one of those hygienic middle class places where I can order snack food, North Indian food, Chinese food, South Indian cuisine, etc. I ordered the vegetarian Bombay Burger and Tandoori Burger to go along with my onion Rava Masala Dosa. Yes, I was that hungry, having jet lag for those previous days, I really didn’t eat much at all. Afterwards, I went to Chor Bazaar, which is an alley full of antiques and Muslim mosques. I bought tons of Bollywood records at this dusty shop, but they had the best prices I’ve ever seen, so dust or not, they got my business.
I remember my first time in Chor Bazaar, I spent a lot of hours digging through these huge man-sized stacks of urine smelling, rat invested and moldy albums that this time, I went for the ones that were in better condition, but that horrendous pile had some really good finds. The better conditioned records were still pretty filthy, just not as smelly. After getting all dirty, I had to go back to one of the hotels Mumbai India where I’m staying to wash up, change clothes and wrap up the records in a towel so they won’t dirty up any of my other clothes.
I took a taxi to the suburb of Bandra to meet up with a new friend, Ravi, and his sisters, Anu and Suma. I made fast friends with Ravi and his sister’s when we were all dancing at a club the other night. Everyone was in a great mood as we headed to the rooftop lounge of an Italian restaurant. We were going there to see a Bollywood singer, Anoushka Manchanda, sing her own songs with a band to back her up. She sang all her songs in English, and most of them were torch songs. In between songs, she get pretty political and personal, too personal I thought.
After that we all went to this dive bar, but we were too late, it already closed for the night. We had no idea we spent all night at the rooftop lounge. Then drove me back to my hotel, and I said goodbye to all of them and thanked them for showing me a great time in Mumbai. As they drove away, Suma threw me a kiss. Hmmm…maybe I’ll have to come back here, soon.
