Midlife in Singapore

The first part of my life had felt like the last scene in La Dolce Vita, where Mastroianni is on a beach, and a little boy is talking to him, and he can’t hear a single word.  I had been living in my art, that was certain, but never could enter into the things of the world.  My sentiments, deeper thoughts, and dreams, were all the stuff of work, to be tempted to move from their state as raw material into something that I could play with and draw patterns on.  I was lost in a maze that the past few decades had created, and no longer cared who was responsible for all the knots.  This would be a perfect opportunity to get to Singapore, and see what a new perspective might offer.

Sitting in a restaurant where Italian food sparks up the place, feeding ethereal as well as physical hungers, is something close to paradise.  It doesn’t take long to get there, and it’s always a luxurious wait when you are finally smelling garlic roasting and eating small bits of bread to save your appetite.  I knew how to eat, however, and didn’t need more opportunities, and actually could have been able to skip a meal like a camel skipping water.  No one would notice, and it might be better for the long travel ahead.  But I am unable to say no to some things.

It would be similar enough to paradise to count as such, then, to celebrate a landmark birthday, this kind of passage, that means a simple transition is to be made, or perhaps that one had already been crossed.  In this case, however, I am resigned philosophically to days of contemplation and the memory of the girls in the summer dresses, but instead I am dancing in the fountain with Ekberg.  This shift is not simply related to the garlic, but is, rather, the direct result, and opens the place where we can hear the words of children.

Statues in Singapore

This was a morning that Singapore would remember.  Cities have memories, they have to.  There is no way that all that pavement, metal, wood and dirt can all work as one constantly shifting organism without their being some kind of sense of identity that develops.  Singapore’s identity is very large, and vast, to be sure, but it’s also a place where there are energies in motion that move toward simplicity every moment.

It’s hard to keep this in mind on some mornings, when there’s still a memory of the taste of the Japanese food from the night before, and a general feeling that this place is filled with possibilities and it’s not a bad idea to try them all.  This was the kind of notion running through my head when I was out and about, enjoying a morning tea and seeing sights, when there was talk about a big event in town, and one of the Buddhist centers was sending people around to look into it.  I was not there, wherever it happened, they say it was close to where I was staying.  But  I don’t know exactly what happened, and when it came to details, no one was willing to tell me much, because these things are kept secret.  Only practitioners can know some of the best gossip, it seems.  Besides, I wasn’t of a mind to investigate, because I had felt a little groggy still from the night before, and wanted to just clear my head and go to the river.  However, I did think it was polite to listen to explanations while they were being offered.

Apparently there is something in Vajrayna doctrine, if it can be called doctrine, about enlightenment and a relationship with lighting.  It is considered to be a perfectly normal occurrence, but anyone who experiences it would think it mystical.  In fact, the feeling is so profound, they say, that there is usually a long period of denial.  I didn’t press the issue beyond this, and went off on my way.  Interestingly, in Singapore, there are more thunderstones in some other places, because they were all up and down the path to the river, and I thought that this was a charming way to begin another day here.

Teamwork: A Requirement for Property Management Companies

Teamwork is one of the elements of business operation that will be a deciding factor on which companies survive the recession and which ones will not. There are many factors of course, but teamwork fosters a feeling of collaboration within a company. It creates a pleasant work environment along with the knowledge that each employee matters, and the tasks and the duties that they perform, along with the valuing of their ideas will foster loyalty. In today’s world, it can be difficult to find a company environment that truly works in this manner. Companies who understand the value of teamwork experience the positive benefits that come from it. In the field of property management , there is the teamwork amongst each other, the teamwork between the owners of the properties and the managers, and the teamwork between the managers and the tenants. If one of these three relationships is not based on collaboration and cooperation, the system fails to be as successful as it could be. Many cultures in the world are based on competition, on being number one individually. This is why it is so hard to find an environment wherein true teamwork exists. Many companies hold seminars and courses on the subject, but not many actually practice it. It takes all kinds, or so the saying goes. In property management, and in any business, there will be some people who are better at certain things, and other people who are better, well…at other things. One characteristic of true teamwork is when a group of different minded people can come together and draw on the strengths of each other. In order for teamwork to happen, those at the top must clearly express what is expected. The goals must be clearly stated, and must be understood by all. The owners must express this to the property managers , and the managers must express this to the tenants, just as the tenants must be willing to express their needs to the managers. It is through this kind of practice that a property management company today will thrive for years into the future.

Make a Budget and Keep It

It is easy to say that you are going to make a budget and stick to it, but it is hard to do in practice. This will not protect you from an emergency, but it will keep your daily spending in check. If you make an unrealistic budget for example, you will spend too much no matter what. The best way to fix this is to look at what you are spending and to cut it down to a more manageable amount taking into consideration how much you make. The best way to start this is to take a realistic look at what you are spending money on during the week. My suggestion is to take a small notebook and carry it around with you everywhere. Note down in it the date, what you bought, and how much it cost for every thing you spend money on. This includes things you pay cash for, and bills you might pay, like your credit card bill. Also note down in there if you have to take out a cash advance loan, or if you have to pay back a bank loan of some type.

At the end of two months of doing this, look at it and add on to there anything you have to pay that is an annual, semi-annual expense or something else you haven’t added on there that you normally would have spent money on. These can be things like car registration and maintenance, tax preparation fees, insurance payments, property taxes, and even seasonal things like gifts for birthdays and holidays and vacation money. Now is also the time to note down your income, taking into account regular bonuses, alimony or any other sources of income you may have including your pay check.

Now determine what categories each of your expenses fall under. Anything that is entertainment can come out of the list for now. Now, list the twelve months out and take note of how much money for each of the remaining categories you will need. So if rent is $450 and utilities are $150 your loans are $300 and food is another $100 for each month, note that down. Also note down the things that don’t happen regularly like property taxes and adjust your total for the month that is due. Now determine how much each month you want to save, putting a note under each month that this is how much will go to your savings instead of your spending. The difference between what you make and the sum of what you have to spend and what you want to save is what you now have for things like going out to restaurants. If you stick with this, it should keep you on track, but make adjustments as necessary.

Sports in Philadelphia

One thing that is inarguable about the city of Philadelphia is the amount of passion that is contained, and sometimes not contained in its sports fans. Sports are a significant part of social orientation in this city as they are for major cities across the nation and it’s interesting to consider the culture of a city based on its orientation to sports. It becomes immediately obvious to guests in some of Philadelphia’s hotels how important sports are to the city. It’s equally interesting to consider city’s in relationship to their arts scene though to look at it in a combined fashion can sometimes be most interesting of all.

Philadelphia also has some amazing entertainment venues and cultural landmarks that contribute to its overall dynamic, atmosphere and cultural make up. It’s important to remember that this was once the second largest cultural, educational and commercial centers of the British Empire and it plays a prominent role in the development of the country. All of this early ambition, passion and cultural significance are expressed in the sports and arts communities of the city.

The Philadelphia Eagles are the city’s major football team and football is one of the more popular sports in the city. The Eagles have three NFL titles under their wings and have been in the Super Bowl twice though they have not yet won one. The 76ers are the NBA team for the city and this is also a popular sport. There are general sports fans and then there are sports specific fans and it’s interesting to find out which sport a particular person follows though they’re likely to be equally passionate about it regardless. Sports are an integral component of Philadelphian society as are the arts though the passion for them are expressed differently by the fans. It’s interesting that both aspects of society engage in important community make up and expressions for any city.

Sontag in Manhattan

This was the moment that I had been waiting for.  Not for all of my life, hold on, I don’t wait that long for anything.  Whenever I end up waiting for too long, I usually start to go ahead an enact the situation I’m waiting for in my head.  If that goes on and I start becoming too self-conscious, because I’m talking to myself and people are looking at me, then I might go ahead and make finger puppets with the napkins and then walk through the situation that way.  This is how some of my favorite evenings begin.  I’ll suggest a restaurant from this link, and then we take it from there.

This was a night that began more interesting than usual, so I sort of figured it was going to end up changing my life.  When I was leaving my apartment, there was a black dog that ran across the threshold to the outside world.  The sun was just setting.  There’s something about figures in the twilight, animal or human, that is somehow not quite right.  You never know when it might be another figure of another sort from another world.  In moments, I would see another shadow that looked like Susan Sontag come back to life, and this is when things shifted.

I didn’t think much of it on the way, although I did start to get itchy for my camera.  I wanted to take pictures of the walk, the subway ride, and even the inside of the restaurant.  It wasn’t because I thought it would be nice to remember this evening, but because I wanted to steal moments in time like fetish objects so that later on I could control time and space.  It’s a guy thing, maybe not everyone understands.  So when I was waiting, it got to the point where I was photographing the finger puppets, and the one who represented my guest began to lecture me against photography, and that was one of the nicest speeches anyone ever gave me.  I don’t remember dinner.  I think there was a twice-baked potato and something else.

Austin is a One of a Kind Place

We arrived in Austin just in time for lunch, and we knew just where we wanted to go, to a south Austin trailer park and eatery. It was told to us by a couple we sat next to on the plane that there’s a restaurant there that serve amazing tacos, the place is called Torchy’s. We don’t know if it was destiny, but we somehow ended up at one of the other locations, instead of the trailer park. But, we didn’t care, just as long as we found one; apparently there are three Torchy’s in total.

When we arrived, the staff got all excited over us, because we were Austin virgins. We placed our order and several of the staff came to our table and wrote down things we must do while we’re here. One of the staff invited us to come on back before we head out and tell them about our experiences. We found this utterly astounding, welcoming and warm, which made our first impression of Austin to be a ‘one-of-a-kind’ place. Austin is not your typical tourist destination, because the locals are so enthusiastic about their city.

We really enjoyed reading the Torchy menu. They offer ten variations of tacos and all with silly names, like Trailer Park tacos, which means you can get you can add queso. Then there’s the Dirty Sanches, The Republicans, Bush Fire and many more names that I can’t remember. But, the signature dish is the green chili queso, which was very spicy, but extremely addicting. I did order the Trailer Park taco, which was a fried chicken tender covered in queso, cilantro, queso blanco, onions and tomatoes. It was so trashy and so awesome. Then we ordered the Baja Shrimp, which I’ve never had anything better: fried shrimp, cilantro, pickled cabbage, lime, onion and green chili creme sauce. I’m going to try to reproduce this dish when we get back home.

After Torchy’s, we walked up to Congress Avenue, which is the main street in Downtown Austin. It was really cool and very unexpected that we had a great view of the city and the State Capitol building all lit up; we were at the South End of Austin. There were lots of Mom and Pops eateries and shops. Our favorite place was where at least 8 silver bullet trailers or wooden trailers were situated on this vacant lot serving a variety of food, like tacos, crepes, sliders, cupcakes and ice cream!

By the time we walked the entire neighborhood and went into several funky stores and bought some pretty wacky things, we headed back to our hotel, located in downtown Austin. We booked our rooms at this site, which offered us a great deal and we found the perfect hotel that suited our needs.

San Antonio Mission

You have found a great room at one of the luxury San Antonio Texas hotels on this site and you are looking for the sights you want to visit while you are there. The Riverwalk is a fantastic experience and it does take you to some of the main attractions in the area. One of these must sees is of course The Alamo. It has been a while since your high school history class so maybe you are a little fuzzy on the details of the Alamo. So here is a small refresher before you visit the most famous place in Texas.

The Alamo, also called San Antonio de Valero, is a mission that was established in 1718 by the Spanish in an attempt to convert the native Indians to Christianity. The Franciscan monks were there for about 75 years and left the mission to who ever needed it at any given time. Different military troops camped there at different times. The native Indians would live in side and others who were just passing by would stop in for a rest. In 1836, as the states and country was developing there came the Texas Revolution. A conflict over land between the settlers in Texas and the government of Mexico. The Alamo would be a major turning point for the conflict.

Texans were forcing there hand for more land and pushed the Mexican Army south back into Mexico. General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna didn’t like that much so he decided to push back. He marched his troops back into the area and waged an assault on the Alamo which housed James Bowie and William B Travis and their men. The battle began with small skirmishes which gave the Texans the chance to realize they may be out numbers. Travis wrote letters to get more supplies and men but not much came to him. All but two Texan men were killed in the battle and the Mexican army won. This started a state riot that brought many angry Texans and other fighters from the rest of the country to fight for revenge and lead to a win for Texans in the Battle of San Jacinto only a month later.

Cyndi’s Manhattan

New York is like anywhere else on earth, except that it’s all of the anywhere else’s all at the same time, and they’re all stacked on top of each other.  It’s a magnificent place to go to try to figure things out, because once you’re there, that silly quest gets lost in order to survive in the here and now.  Important things happen in the moment, and the more you notice the moment, the more true this becomes.  Manhattan is a great place to get woken up to all manner of things, and when it comes to waking up, Manhattan’s hotels are the best because of their combination of hospitality and style.  It’s a quintessential New York experience to stay at hotels in a place where the hotel industry has a reputation to uphold.

After the accommodations, the rest is up to you.  There are always plenty of things to do, and if you’re only interested in watching people and meeting people, then this city is going to make your head spin.  It’s one of the great megacities, where cultures and languages shift constantly, and constantly surprise each other.  It’s the perfect place, in fact, to see the birth of Cyndi Lauper.  She wasn’t born in Manhattan, however, but in Queens, which makes perfect sense when you get to know her a bit.  Her way of walking, speaking, and attitude all point to Queens.

She changed the way we thought about music.  Her videos were among the first to use art design in a truly considered manner, and she herself is an ironic quotation of herself.  It’s something that very few people can do, right out of the chute, and Lady Gaga perhaps being the next logical successor of this art.  Cyndi Lauper’s sense of play is, however, different than anything else on the planet.  And her generosity is equally unique, and worthy of celebration.  Her recent fame is coming from her work with her own True Colors foundation.  This charity organization is designed to help the LGBT community, and next year will see an opening of a new supportive housing community.  Like a rainbow, she started off pretty splendidly, and grows more interesting and bright with time.

Chicago Rival Continues Its Run in New York

Chicago is one of the current musical offerings on the New York Broadway stage. It is playing at the Ambassador Theatre on West 49th Street as it continues its incredible revival run that began in 1996. It is currently the sixth longest running Broadway show in history. The musical is based on actual arrests and crime reports that were the source of a play written by Maurine Dallas Watkins. Watkins was a reporter and covered the these stories, which she adapted to a play in 1926. The production of Chicago that is currently running is actually a revival of the original production, which opened at the 46th Street Theater in 1975. The choreography for the original production was by Bob Fosse.
