Austin is a One of a Kind Place February 15th, 2010
We arrived in Austin just in time for lunch, and we knew just where we wanted to go, to a south Austin trailer park and eatery. It was told to us by a couple we sat next to on the plane that there’s a restaurant there that serve amazing tacos, the place is called Torchy’s. We don’t know if it was destiny, but we somehow ended up at one of the other locations, instead of the trailer park. But, we didn’t care, just as long as we found one; apparently there are three Torchy’s in total.
When we arrived, the staff got all excited over us, because we were Austin virgins. We placed our order and several of the staff came to our table and wrote down things we must do while we’re here. One of the staff invited us to come on back before we head out and tell them about our experiences. We found this utterly astounding, welcoming and warm, which made our first impression of Austin to be a ‘one-of-a-kind’ place. Austin is not your typical tourist destination, because the locals are so enthusiastic about their city.
We really enjoyed reading the Torchy menu. They offer ten variations of tacos and all with silly names, like Trailer Park tacos, which means you can get you can add queso. Then there’s the Dirty Sanches, The Republicans, Bush Fire and many more names that I can’t remember. But, the signature dish is the green chili queso, which was very spicy, but extremely addicting. I did order the Trailer Park taco, which was a fried chicken tender covered in queso, cilantro, queso blanco, onions and tomatoes. It was so trashy and so awesome. Then we ordered the Baja Shrimp, which I’ve never had anything better: fried shrimp, cilantro, pickled cabbage, lime, onion and green chili creme sauce. I’m going to try to reproduce this dish when we get back home.
After Torchy’s, we walked up to Congress Avenue, which is the main street in Downtown Austin. It was really cool and very unexpected that we had a great view of the city and the State Capitol building all lit up; we were at the South End of Austin. There were lots of Mom and Pops eateries and shops. Our favorite place was where at least 8 silver bullet trailers or wooden trailers were situated on this vacant lot serving a variety of food, like tacos, crepes, sliders, cupcakes and ice cream!
By the time we walked the entire neighborhood and went into several funky stores and bought some pretty wacky things, we headed back to our hotel, located in downtown Austin. We booked our rooms at this site, which offered us a great deal and we found the perfect hotel that suited our needs.
