1970s Fashion is Now Costumes

The nineteen seventies were a crazy time and the music and sometimes fashion related to that decade remains popular today. And while certain lifestyle elements have gone out of fashion, dress styles and music certainly hasn’t. In fact, nineteen seventies costumes are popular for many occasions. They are frequent Halloween party theme costumes and they are also seen regularly at various other costume oriented events. And you can be sure that anyone who is decked out in bell bottoms and large lapel lounge shirts with big hair is certainly going to bust a few moves, wherever they happen to be.

Children are also getting into the act and the seventies have become a popular Halloween costume for youngsters. This is a great way of keeping the decade alive and parents too are participating in the trend. Plus size 70s costumes can be found almost anywhere costumes are sold and if you are planning to dress up in this style for Halloween this year, you should get your costume early. They have a tendency to go very fast, unlike the decade in which they are based. Costume parties are intended to be fun, so dress up and let loose. Just remember that the next day you’re going to wake up in 2010 or later, so don’t get too far out there.

Miami Summer Dance Festivals

Miami has long been known as the place to go for dancing the night away and it has clubs dedicated to dancing and music . However, frequently we seem to forget that there’s more to this city than the clubs like the vibrant performing arts theaters and centers that call Miami home.

Marriage, Casinos and Cher in Las Vegas

So, you and your boyfriend have decided that you have an upcoming weekend off and you’d like to get out of town for a while. That sounds great and now you only have to decide where you’d like to go. Popular opinion suggests that you can have an amazing time in Las Vegas, which is known for its amazing ability to cater to the whims and needs of its guests. You make your plans and soon you and your special someone are headed straight toward one of the Vegas four star hotels . And while you haven’t specifically planned out your exact agenda, you are well aware of all the great entertainment options and fun activities that are associated with this city so you fully expect to have a great time.

And your stay there gets off to an excellent start. You enjoy a fabulous buffet breakfast and then head straight for some slot machines in one of the major casinos. This city is truly glitzy and you’re immediately enticed by all the lights and glitter. After a few coins are dropped into one or two of the machines you decide you’d like to tour the city a little bit and head out to the busy streets. You drive down the strip and enjoy the people watching opportunities as well as take in the grandeur of some of the huge casinos. Suddenly your boyfriend suggests you find tickets for a show for that night and you immediately agree with the idea.

So, the two of you look through the paper and have trouble choosing between Cher , The Lion King, David Copperfield or Chris Angel and finally decide on Cher since she has been a personal favorite of both of yours for, well, your entire lives. The show is incredible and you enjoy a delicious dinner before heading out to do some more gambling. You decide you’re feeling a bit courageous and actually sit down at one of the poker tables, where you soon loose two hundred dollars. To cheer you up your boyfriend suggests you get married by Elvis at one of the chapels. You laugh and think it’s an urban legend, so the two of you determine to find Elvis and it turns out it’s not that difficult. You are so impressed with the idea that you and your boyfriend actually end up married. You return home the next day and inform your co-workers, family and friends of your incredible weekend. They feel a little left out.

Sports in Philadelphia

One thing that is inarguable about the city of Philadelphia is the amount of passion that is contained, and sometimes not contained in its sports fans. Sports are a significant part of social orientation in this city as they are for major cities across the nation and it’s interesting to consider the culture of a city based on its orientation to sports. It becomes immediately obvious to guests in some of Philadelphia’s hotels how important sports are to the city. It’s equally interesting to consider city’s in relationship to their arts scene though to look at it in a combined fashion can sometimes be most interesting of all.

Philadelphia also has some amazing entertainment venues and cultural landmarks that contribute to its overall dynamic, atmosphere and cultural make up. It’s important to remember that this was once the second largest cultural, educational and commercial centers of the British Empire and it plays a prominent role in the development of the country. All of this early ambition, passion and cultural significance are expressed in the sports and arts communities of the city.

The Philadelphia Eagles are the city’s major football team and football is one of the more popular sports in the city. The Eagles have three NFL titles under their wings and have been in the Super Bowl twice though they have not yet won one. The 76ers are the NBA team for the city and this is also a popular sport. There are general sports fans and then there are sports specific fans and it’s interesting to find out which sport a particular person follows though they’re likely to be equally passionate about it regardless. Sports are an integral component of Philadelphian society as are the arts though the passion for them are expressed differently by the fans. It’s interesting that both aspects of society engage in important community make up and expressions for any city.

Cyndi’s Manhattan

New York is like anywhere else on earth, except that it’s all of the anywhere else’s all at the same time, and they’re all stacked on top of each other.  It’s a magnificent place to go to try to figure things out, because once you’re there, that silly quest gets lost in order to survive in the here and now.  Important things happen in the moment, and the more you notice the moment, the more true this becomes.  Manhattan is a great place to get woken up to all manner of things, and when it comes to waking up, Manhattan’s hotels are the best because of their combination of hospitality and style.  It’s a quintessential New York experience to stay at hotels in a place where the hotel industry has a reputation to uphold.

After the accommodations, the rest is up to you.  There are always plenty of things to do, and if you’re only interested in watching people and meeting people, then this city is going to make your head spin.  It’s one of the great megacities, where cultures and languages shift constantly, and constantly surprise each other.  It’s the perfect place, in fact, to see the birth of Cyndi Lauper.  She wasn’t born in Manhattan, however, but in Queens, which makes perfect sense when you get to know her a bit.  Her way of walking, speaking, and attitude all point to Queens.

She changed the way we thought about music.  Her videos were among the first to use art design in a truly considered manner, and she herself is an ironic quotation of herself.  It’s something that very few people can do, right out of the chute, and Lady Gaga perhaps being the next logical successor of this art.  Cyndi Lauper’s sense of play is, however, different than anything else on the planet.  And her generosity is equally unique, and worthy of celebration.  Her recent fame is coming from her work with her own True Colors foundation.  This charity organization is designed to help the LGBT community, and next year will see an opening of a new supportive housing community.  Like a rainbow, she started off pretty splendidly, and grows more interesting and bright with time.

A Murder Mystery Dinner Show in Austin

A good friend of mine reviews plays for the weekly paper Phoenix NewTimes.  She has taken me to many shows over the years, great theater in the Valley of the Sun, found in sometimes strange places.  For me, dinner shows are always a bit unnerving for more often than not, the whole premise is that the audience members become part of the show.  Now, I was in a theatre company and for many years worked every night on a stage with a live audience, but to become part of the show with a moment’s notice is something that has always made me extremely uncomfortable.

She and I took a trip to Austin last summer.  She had booked a great room in one of the Austin luxury hotels, compliments of the NewTimes.  She was in town to review a company called the Capital City Mystery Players, and I was along for the ride.  They have been performing in the city for years, each Saturday night at the Spaghetti Warehouse, and every third Sunday at the Cool River Cafe.  We were there for one of the Spaghetti Warehouse shows.  One of my culinary true loves is spaghetti and meatballs, and so while I was eagerly anticipating the meal, I was a bit nervous about the show.  I did not want to be pulled away from my pasta only to become part of a show.  She on the other hand, loved getting pulled into the show and had done so on many, many occasions.

On the bill that night was a comedy/murder mystery called “The Linguini Code”, and I must say it was a “who dunit” filled with laughter and incredible performances by the cast of characters, of which I am so happy to say, I was not a part of.  After the show, we went backstage while she interviewed members of the company.  This is not just a performance company, but one that conducts team building meetings using theater as the means.  They have been instrumental in working with some of the top Austin corporations and businesses and are hired on a regular basis.  Theater is their day job and their passion, a perfect combination.  This is definitely a company to watch in the years to come.

Goa Bullfighting

Savvy world travelers are always impressed by the quality and style in the five-star hotels in Goa.  There is a splendid sense of otherworldliness and luxury here, featuring a rich and heady combination of new-world state of the art technology, and old world graciousness and class.  Hospitality is a long tradition here, and visitors will understand why Goa has been such a popular global destination for generations.  It truly is a world-class city, where local culture and tradition is preserved, and international influences make their way into the daily life here, and its eclectic nature is rather intoxicating.

Goa has long been a haven for the counter-culture, and has a fascinating, and very complex, history.  There is an incredible mixture of ideas and perspectives here, and they make for some lively interactions.   There are also some interesting cultural productions, too.  One of the more fascinating spectacles from Goa’s history is the bullfight.  Banned officially since 1998, there has long been talk of rejuvenating the tradition, and it seems that every few years there is a push both for legalization and against the practice.

Goa Bullfighting some argue, has its roots from the Portuguese occupation during the colonial days.  In practice, it’s very different than in other parts of the world.  Here, bullfighting is more along the lines of cockfighting, where two bulls are put into a ring.  They are then coaxed and prodded to go after each other, and the most desirable fight is when the bulls run toward each other until they knock heads.  The bull who can stay in the ring wins, and the one who limps away is the loser.  As expected, this practice has a lot of animal rights activists on guard, and it also has a number of proponents claiming that it is a long tradition, and the ones who raise the animals keep them as beloved pets.  Whatever argument makes more sense, it is still an interesting phenomenon, one that stems from a vivacious culture.

Madrid’s Carmen Maura

In that enviable rank of five-star, Madrid hotels have a natural advantage over the rest of the world.  It is one of the most splendid cities on the planet, in one of the most fascinating countries in the world.  The hotels here are, not surprisingly, a generous combination of grace and luxury, with some of the most cutting edge design and outstanding customer service that give Spain a reputation for hospitality.  The hospitality here is as remarkable as the culture, with a vast array of museums and galleries, and performance spaces that offer the best in world theatre, music, and dance.  Then there are the sumptuous restaurants, offering the best in world cuisine, where all of these things of high culture can be discussed.

One of the icon’s of culture in Madrid is the actress Carmen Maura.  She was born in Madrid and began her film work in 1969, with the short, El Espiritu.  Carmen Maura has been in a hundred films since then, and has worked with most of Spain’s most prominent directors, making her one of the most visible faces in contemporary Spanish cinema.  She has won multiple awards, including the European Film Festival Best Actress Award twice.  The second time was for her work in Ay, Carmela!, where she played an entertainer during the Spanish Civil War.  This was directed by one of the most important names in world cinema, Carlos Saura.

Her most popular work, however, has been with the extremely influential Pedro Almódovar.  Almódovar met Carmen Maura when they were working on a theatrical production of Sartre’s Dirty Hands, and they worked together on his first film, Pepi, Luci, Bom, in 1980.  There have been multiple projects since then, and her most famous work, perhaps, was in his Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, which brought them both international attention and acclaim.  Her own position in the history of Spain, having turned 30 when Franco died, makes her a particularly apt actress for Almódovar’s films, because she lived through a time when the traditions of hospitality and chivalry were starting to show their seams.  Identity and liberation were pushed to their limits under the old-world notions, and generations of young people around the world would look for possible escape routes where the individual could find possibilities rather than repression.  It is this link that makes her work in his films so remarkable on a meta-cinematic level, and her expertise as an actress that makes them work in the purely artistic sphere.  Her work is still going strong, and it will be fascinating to see what the next decades will bring for this magnificent artist.

Andy Roddick: America’s Tennis hope

American tennis player Andy Roddick was a little bit of the American tennis gem there for a little bit. After winning the 2003 US Open, he then reached three other Grand Slam finals. Two in Wimbledon and another US Open, he lost to Roger Federer each time. He has failed to reach the finals in The French Open and the Australian Open.

Roddick holds the record for the fastest serve ever recorded in professional tennis of 155 mph.

After his amazing 2003 season he then suffered a series of injuries and has been fighting his way back to world number on status ever since. He currently sits at number six in the world. But competition is fierce now.

Not to mention his tennis rival Roger Federer has been knocked out as the world number one, he still sits in between Roddick and the number one ranking. And then there is Rafael Nadal, who has just become a tennis powerhouse. He is going for his fourth consecutive title at The French Open this year.

The French Open has been a place of defeat for both Roddick and Federer.

Roddick has seen prosperity on the grass courts of Wimbledon, and could find that to be the surface he excels on and of course the US Open.

Time will tell if Roddick can ever regain his former number one glory.

Flowers and Fireworks, Tomatoes and Graffiti

Valencia is the third largest city in Spain. Until the beginning of the 1990′s it had been an industrial city, but with the growing tourism industry restoring many buildings and luxury hotels, Valencia has become quite a hot-spot. Throughout the year, various festival serve to bring people into the city and serve, well food and fun and celebration. The climate may become relatively hot during the summer months, so most of the festivals occur on either end of the season. In the month of October many travel to this region in Europe to celebrate and enjoy the ‘frutti de mar’, the delicious seafood–the fruit of the sea, that has become so famous from this region.

One of the funniest festivals in the country, perhaps around the world, is a food fight. Story is, that it began as just that, a simple food fight in local restaurant in 1945. This is now the high-light of many living in Valencia and has drawn international travelers to the city to participate. Any one attending the festival should be prepared to get a bit messy, as the focus is to have some wine, eat some food, and then throw ripe tomatoes at friends and strangers passing by on the street. This festival draws more than 10,000 participates every year. Pounds and pounds of tomatoes are transported for the event.

The spring festival in Valencia, is a bit less saucy…in a way. The streets are decorated with hundreds of wooden and paper mache sculptures. Events take place for many days including movie openings to concerts, to fireworks, bull fights, and flower exhibits. There is a tremendous amount of celebrating in the streets at the onset and throughout. The music festivals begin at this time as well. One of the most anticipated musical events of the year is Festimad. Local and famous rock bands come together for two days, bringing thousands from the country, and thousands from across Europe. Many restaurants and bars set up tents on the street to accommodate those attending the shows. There is also a Glastonbury inspired event, the alternative music festival. Three days of music, visual artists, and performance artists showing their works on the street. As well, there are world known graffiti artists, extreme sports, and trapeze circus performers. This event is 24 hours a day, with non-stop fun, dancing and music.
