The American imagination is actually filled with images of guns. Early explorers and pioneers carried guns in order to defend themselves against wild animals as well as Native Americans. As civilization spread out, the Wild West became a hotbed of gun fights and shoot outs that were superseded only by the appearance of gangster violence during and after prohibition. By the end of the twentieth century, guns were bigger and faster and used not only by drug gangs in the streets but in movies and televisions shows by countless members of law enforcement and the military.
Many people can actually credit their first knowledge of gun safes to popular culture. In the past decade, with the proliferation of police, FBI, and related figures on television, the number of law enforcement roles has exploded. When these characters return to their homes, they are shown locking their side arm into a safe.
Gun owners have quite a number of options when it comes to gun safes. There are small safes for a single pistol. These can sit securely on a desk or shelf. Gun safes can also be embedded in a wall. Larger safes are available for storing multiple guns or larger weapons. There are even gun cabinets that can be secured and that will hold as many as three dozen rifles or other guns. These are especially useful for families of hunters or private gun collectors.
