Styles of Measuring Tapes

There seem to be two different motivations for measurement. The first is the desire for accuracy. This applies to scientific measurement from the smallest subatomic particle to the largest astronomical distances. Precision is required to ensure accurate calculations. The second reason to measure is tied to competition. The human desire to know what is the tallest, fastest, and biggest of a given thing is fairly inescapable. Rankings for the hottest, driest, and most of anything require a way to measure those features and compare them.

In daily life most people employ measurement for the first reason. They need to know whether a room is big enough to hold a certain sofa or how much fabric to take in on a piece of second-hand clothing. Measuring tapes are useful in both of those circumstances — though there are two different basic styles of measuring tape in common household use. All tape measures are based on the simple idea of using a tape to measure the length or girth of something. The tape is then rolled into a coil for storage. Some tapes come on spools while others are in spring cases.

The sewing measuring tape is descended from cloth tapes that were in use at least as far back as the 1700s. Today these tapes are usually made from flexible fiberglass or plastic. They remain elastic enough to wrap around a body or piece of bulky furniture, but are far less likely to stretch out of shape as cloth does. The other style of tape measure is the construction or carpenters tape. It is usually made of metal or acrylic which allows it to hold position to measure large spaces. It has a spring mechanism that will automatically roll the tape back into a coil in a hard casing.

Office Spirit

Raising company morale has never been more critical than in what is coming to be known as the Great Recession. Companies are struggling to survive, which puts added layers of stress on workers who may be facing their own financial difficulties at home. Living with the threat of further layoffs while being forced to pick up the work of those who were already let go can demolish any sense of company spirit. It is vital that companies find way to encourage and support their employees during this slump.

An economical way to raise morale is to take a page from high schools. Theme or spirit days are a staple in many schools to raise student spirits and help kids feel more connected to one another. The same concept can be applied to office life. Scheduling a sports day or a super hero day or any day that allows employees to step a little bit outside of themselves and have an excuse for a costume rental will improve the mood not just of individuals, but of the entire office. These events require little outlay by the company, just announcements and maybe a prize for best costume. Having a small social gathering with cake or theme-appropriate snacks is a slightly more expensive endeavor that can add to the festivities.

With many companies pulling back from acknowledging traditional holidays due to their religious and cultural origins, creating alternative excuses for office celebrations , games, and gatherings is a good substitute. Try making them as silly as possible as the sillier the costume or game, the more employees will be allowed to loosen up and release some of that stress and tension that is so counterproductive for both themselves and the company.

The Effects of Alcohol Abuse

Alcoholism has long been the elephant in the corner of many living rooms. Because American society encourages drinking in social and celebratory situations, the number of people who “tie one on” a little too often is staggering. Most families and friends tolerate a “friendly drunk” and many even put up with mean and abusive drunks because they refuse to acknowledge that alcohol is an addictive substance and needs to be treated as such.

Not everyone who drinks regularly needs to get alcohol abuse treatment . However, they need to be made aware of the difference between use and abuse and educated about the negative effects of abuse. These include damages to relationships, their ability to keep a job, and can lead to risky behaviors that result in sexually transmitted diseases as well as injuries from accidents, to say nothing of the perils of drunk driving. The physical risks associated with alcoholism include damage to the gastrointestinal system as well as the nervous system and heart-related illnesses and conditions. These can be serious or even fatal. Other problems will be related to metabolic issues, the endocrine system, or affect the blood and skin. Big Apple Landmarks

They come for the food, for the energy, for the theater and performing arts. They come for the music, for the melting pot culture and for the exciting nightlife of the City that Never Sleeps. But more than that, they come for the many, many landmarks that mark the city’s — and the country’s — historical, societal, and cultural — milestones.

Oddly, a few of the city’s iconic landmarks are actually New York City hotels . The Plaza and the Waldorf Astoria have both played their role in symbolizing the uppercrust of New York. Today they stand as monuments to luxury and quality. The city is also home to several monuments to retail. Fifth Avenue is world famous for exclusive shopping. Tiffany’s, FAO Schwartz , and many other important merchants have their flagship stores in New York, many in Times Square.

Architectural landmarks in NYC range from the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building to Rockefeller Center , Madison Square Garden, and the under construction One World Trade Center. Other landmarks worth a stop during a trip to New York include the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, the United Nations, and Carnegie Hall.

Bright Nights in Vancouver

Vancouver is a great place to visit, especially during the Holiday Season. Every year, millions of lights transform the city’s Stanley Park into a winter wonderland of light. While area families look forward to an annual trip to the event and some people even schedule their vacations to coincide with it, even business travelers staying in luxury Vancouver hotels can be transported back to childhood by a trip through the park on a crisp December night.

A holiday tradition for nearly twenty years, Bright Nights in Stanley Park runs from the day after Thanksgiving through New Year’s. This year’s official dates are November 26, 2010 to January 2, 2011. Access to Stanley Park is free and the Lights are on from 3pm – 10pm each night. Donations are accepted at the gate to benefit the BC Professional Fire Fighter’s Burn Fund .

The park’s miniature railway is decorated for the event and offers a unique ride through the lighted forest, an international village and Santa’s Workshop. Kids can also visit Santa’s Living Room, complete with Santa, at the Train Station. Purchasing a ticket for the train ride grants admission to the Children’s Farmyard, which is also brightly lit for the Season.

Sunny Isles Jazz Fest

Anyone staying in five star Miami hotels the weekend of October 15-17 will want to check out the 3rd Annual Sunny Isles Beach Jazz Fest. Located in the Florida Riviera, Sunny Isles is only 30 minutes from downtown Miami and will host a weekend of extraordinary jazz set against the backdrop of the glorious Atlantic Ocean.

The 2010 Jazz Fest will feature both notable local jazz artists as well as some world famous musicians and entertainers. The event kicks off on October 15th with renowned jazz pianist and composer Tony Sona. Saturday’s gala event features Ed Calle (saxophone), Jesse Jones Jr.(saxophone and flute) with Yvonne Brown (vocals), and Oriente, a noted Afro-Cuban band. Sunday’s Jazz Brunch features the stylings of Grammy-nominated Troy Roberts (composer, saxophone).

This year’s event is a benefit for the Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation and Joshua’s Heart Foundation , which is dedicated to stomping out childhood hunger in underprivileged and indigent communities as well as ensuring disabled and ill children get the proper nutrition.

Oktoberfest Street Fair in Cambridge

For 30 years residents, college students, and visitors from luxury hotels Boston have gathered in Harvard Square for the annual Oktoberfest Festival. The 31st Annual event will take place on Sunday, October 10th with a raindate of October 11th.

Organized by the Harvard Square Business Association this Oktoberfest street fair emphasizes culture, music, and food, rather than beer. Every year hundreds of vendors display artwork, vintage clothing, and jewelry from around the world as well as handcrafted local arts. Some booths resemble swap meets or yard sales which adds charm to the event. Area shops get into the act with sidewalk sales and special discounts and over thirty area restaurants set up stalls selling everything from fair food to international cuisines.

For the past few years Oktoberfest has paired with the HONK! Festival held the same weekend in nearby Davis Square. On Sunday, the HONK! bands parade to Harvard Square and then perform throughout the event. There are a total of six stages providing a variety of live entertainment in addition to HONK! acts.
